Abstract
Until the arrival of Europeans to the coast of Africa, indigenous alcohol brands were heavily consumed. The arrival of Europeans with foreign alcohol brands came with heavy advertisement focusing on the idea of modernity. Although the people did not abandon indigenous consumption of alcohol, imported alcohol brands became a yardstick for measuring class and thus created a new form of identity not previously in existence.
