Crime and fear of crime continues to increase in recreational settings. However, research on the implementation of crime prevention programs in urban parks is scarce. This study inventories crime prevention strategies as reported by directors of municipal recreation and park agencies. A total of 129 (52 per cent) agencies responded from the 250 largest cities in the United States. The focus was on identifying methods employed to reduce incivilities and crime, generally based on Crime prevention through environmental design strategies listed as options for directors to report their implementation levels. The most widely used strategies were trash removal, graffiti removal, signage and the use of lighting. Less utilized approaches were the stationing of uniformed park personnel, Closed circuit television use, call boxes or the presence of park watch citizen groups. Further research on improving park safety for visitors is needed.
