In this article, I argue that “imagination” and “imaginaries” (arguably quite different but often conflated) have acquired too many meanings, which are in turn too imprecisely applied and combined, to usefully illuminate mechanisms of social belonging. I begin by reviewing others’ critiques of the concepts and the ways scholars have sought to organize and manage its meaning(s) and offering a synthesis of these. I argue for the arbitrariness of such lineages before demonstrating the ways in which various combinations of imagination‐imaginaries have been assembled and deployed in current literature. I contend that ongoing efforts to use and extrapolate the term, or to decipher or cull its meaning, merely recuperate its value as a catchall device for asserting social collectivity and claiming broad relevance of often limited ethnographic data. After arguing, through example, that other theories and concepts often better do the analytical work that anthropologists intend imagination and imaginaries to perform, I conclude with a metatheoretical reflection on the relationship between imagination and contradiction. En este artículo, argumento que “imaginación” e “imaginarios” (argüiblemente bastante diferentes pero a menudo confundidos) han adquirido demasiados significados, los cuales a la vez de manera excesiva son imprecisamente aplicados y combinados, para iluminar de manera útil los mecanismos de pertenencia social. Empiezo revisando las críticas de otros acerca de los conceptos y de las maneras cómo los investigadores han buscado organizar y manejar su(s) significado(s) y ofreciendo una síntesis de éstos. Presento argumentos por la arbitrariedad de tales linajes y connotativas “agrupaciones” antes de demostrar las maneras en las cuales varias combinaciones de variedades imaginacionales han sido ensambladas y utilizadas en la literatura actual. Sostengo que los esfuerzos en desarrollo para usar y extrapolar el término, o descifrar o seleccionar su significado, meramente recuperan su valor como un artificio general para afirmar la colectividad social y reivindicar, una amplia relevancia de datos etnográficos limitados. Después de argumentar, a través de ejemplos, que otras teorías y conceptos a menudo hacen mejor el trabajo analítico que los antropólogos intentan que imaginación e imaginarios representen, concluyo con una reflexión metateórica sobre la relación entre imaginación y contradicción.
