Abstract

["Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management, EarlyView. Although sustainability has gained significant attention in the tourism sector, there is limited knowledge on how SHRM can enhance employee well‐being, performance, achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and contribute to sustainable destination development. Using a qualitative research design based on focus group discussions with 21 Human Resource Managers from Mauritian hotels, this study explores the relationship between SHRM and leadership roles, employee and organisational outcomes, AI, sustainable development goals, and their implications for developing a sustainable tourist destination. The results show that hotels are progressively adopting SHRM through green practices and socially responsible practices that enhance well‐being, motivation, and organisational resilience. However, SHRM is not yet fully embedded, with significant gaps in common good human resource management and green human resource management. The results also highlight the fundamental role of leadership in implementing SHRM, the limited use of artificial intelligence in hotels, and the alignment of SHRM with several Sustainable Development Goals. Despite its potential, the adoption of SHRM is constrained by financial limitations, labour shortages, generational differences, and structural policy barriers. This study is among the few qualitative studies examining SHRM as a mechanism for sustainable destination development in Mauritius and demonstrating that a more integrated implementation of SHRM is essential for creating a sustainable workforce, improving service quality, and transforming Mauritius into a sustainable tourism destination.\n"]
